The Aztec spoke a language called Nahuatl. Nahuatl was the main language spoken during the time the Aztec's had ruled. In the language of Nahuatl, they used pictures instead of letters. There are pictograms, ideograms, and phonograms. Pictograms were literally just pictures or symbols used to mean what they looked like. Example- a picture of a jaguar meant a jaguar. Ideograms were the ideas behind the symbols. Example- A spear could mean hunting. Phonograms are symbols that mean a sound.
The Aztecs had a different numbering system too, they counted to 20 instead of 10. They used dots for single 1-4 and lines for 5's. For 10, either two lines, 10 dots, or a diamond were used. A flag meant 20 and for hundreds different variations of feathers were used. For 8000 a bag of cacao beans were used.
