The Aztecs had originated from northeastern Mexico. They had wandered many miles south in search of an eagle. The eagle had to be sitting atop a nopal cactus (known as the prickly pear cactus) eating a serpent. This is where they were to build up their empire. This legend inspired Mexico to make it their coat of arms and have it on their flag.
The Aztec empire ruled in the southern part of Mexico and part of Guatemala. The Aztecs built up there empire by battling neighboring empires.
Capitol City Of Tenochtitlan
Tenochtitlan was constructed in the middle of Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. It was the largest city built during its time. There are estimates of the population being over 200,000, where the largest city was 80,000. Tenochtitlan was also a very advanced city. There were large aqueducts bringing in freshwater from the Chapultepec springs for homes. The city had canals going through it for transportation. Around the city were floating gardens to grow crops on too. Every home had its own steam bath
